Description
The MPO gene encodes myeloperoxidase, a lysosomal hemoprotein in the azurophilic granules of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes. MPO is activated into a potent antimicrobial intermediate in response to stimulation. It is translated as a 90 kDa protein, which is proteolytically cleaved into a heavy chain (59 kDa) and a light chain (13.5 kDa). These subunits dimerize to form the mature MPO heterotetramer. MPO defects cause myeloperoxidase deficiency (MPOD).
