The lipid-based drug delivery system is a category of newly developed drug carriers that consist of several types of lipid-based formulations with different structures, such as emulsions, vesicular systems, lipid particulate systems, lipid-core micelles, miscellaneous types, solid lipid tablets, and their subcategories. These different lipid formulations all share some common characteristics like increased solubility, higher stability, better biocompatibility and bioavailability, targeted delivery and low toxicity, etc. Therefore, these lipid-based drug delivery systems are widely applied in carrying pharmaceutical drugs with different modalities, surprisingly including those important bioactive agents such as peptides, proteins, and small molecular, nucleic acids.
