Liposomes Phospholipids Lipids Kits

Ether Lipid Products

Creative Biolabs is offering a series of high-quality ether lipids for biological research. Unlike other phospholipids, ether lipids are peroxisome-derived glycerophospholipids with an ether bond between the glycerol backbone and the hydrocarbon chain rather than an ester bond. The simple biochemical change made ether lipids different in structure and functions.

Ether lipids are quite abundant in mammals, accounting for approximately 20% of the total phospholipid pool and vary in different tissues. The majority of the ether lipids are located in the brain, heart, spleen, and white blood cells. There are two types of ether lipids, plasmanyl-phospholipids or plasmenyl-phospholipids (plasmalogens), characterized by an alkyl or an alkenyl chain attached to the sn-1 position of the glycerol phosphate group through an ether bond. Plasmalogen is the most common form of ether lipids with an ester bond at the sn-2 position of the glycerol backbone. According to different head groups, plasmalogens are classified as PC plasmalogens (plasmenylcholines) and PE plasmalogens (plasmenylethalomines), etc.
