Our expertise and technology can significantly accelerate your research progress in this field.

Background of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), also called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is a liver injury acquired due to metabolic stress. It's characterized by excessive lipid accumulation in hepatocytes, excluding damage from alcohol and other explicit hepatotoxins. NAFLD is closely associated with several metabolic disorders:

  • Diabetes and Obesity: Type 2 diabetes and obesity are primary risk factors for NAFLD, and they often exacerbate each other.
  • Cardiovascular Diseases: NAFLD can increase cardiovascular disease risk through two main pathways: (1) by releasing inflammatory mediators, thrombogenic substances, and pro - oxidants; and (2) by promoting insulin resistance and atherosclerosis.
  • Disease Progression: NAFLD covers a range of liver conditions. It starts with nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) and can get worse into the more serious nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). If not taken care of, NASH can lead to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even hepatocellular carcinoma.

Treatment Strategies for NAFLD

  • Dietary Intervention: A balanced diet can help reduce liver fat and alleviate metabolic disorders.
  • Weight Management: Weight loss through exercise is a key factor in improving the histological damage of NAFLD.
  • Pharmacological Treatment: Various drugs can effectively treat NAFLD by regulating lipid metabolism, improving oxidative stress, alleviating endoplasmic reticulum stress, and reducing inflammation.
  • RNA Therapy: RNA therapies offer promising avenues by modulating the expression of genes involved in lipid uptake, transport, oxidation, and secretion, thereby regulating lipid metabolism.

How Creative Biolabs' Lipid-Based Drug Delivery Systems Can Assist Your Project

Lipid-based drug delivery systems offer numerous advantages for NAFLD treatment. They enhance drug solubility and stability, improve bioavailability, enable targeted delivery to the liver, and reduce systemic side effects. These systems can also be combined with RNA therapies for liver-targeted delivery of mRNA, siRNA, and ASO. Our systems are designed to optimize therapeutic outcomes while minimizing adverse effects, making them ideal for advancing NAFLD research.
