Targeting Heart

The strategies of heart-targeted drug delivery refer to the direction of active agents and their carriers into the affected tissue with minimal effects on surrounding healthy tissues after systemic administration. The efficacious delivery of drugs to the heart is an important treatment strategy for various heart diseases. Having worked in the field of organ-targeted delivery for many years, Creative Biolabs has developed innovative and diversified organ-targeted modules. The success of nanocarriers for delivering drugs to therapeutic sites in the heart mainly depends on specific target sites, appropriate drug delivery carriers and effective targeting ligands. Successful targeted drug delivery suggests the specific deposition of a drug in the heart with minimal effects on other organs after administration. At present, heart-targeted drug delivery systems include dendrimers, liposomes, polymeric drug conjugates, microparticles, nanoparticles (silica nanoparticles, magnetic nanoparticles, magnetic nanoparticles, Pt-modified TiO2 nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles), micelles and microbubbles.

A successful design for heart-targeted nanoscale drug delivery systems is mainly based on two parameters. First, heart-target vehicles play a crucial role in protecting therapeutics from immediate degradation in the blood, thus suitable heart-targeted drug carriers need to be selected. Second and perhaps more importantly, an appropriate targeting moiety is needed to ensure the specific interaction of the nanocarriers with the complementary molecules on the surface of the targeted cells in the heart. The heart-homing module may provide a means of targeting diagnostic and therapeutic agents to the heart in that way. Numerous reports have proved the application of heart-targeted modules.
