Canine Coronavirus Vaccines - Creative Biolabs

Canine coronavirus (CCoV) is a highly infectious intestinal infection which is specific to dogs, especially puppies. Coronavirus is usually short-lived, but may attack the intestinal tract with common symptoms such as diarrhea, loss of appetite, vomiting, and fever. The virus spreads through contact with oral secretions or infected feces. The coronavirus invades and replicates in the villi of the small intestine, and is limited to the upper two-thirds of the small intestine and local lymph nodes. Although the CCoV infection is generally considered to be a relatively mild disease with sporadic symptoms, or none at all, but if a CCoV infection occurs simultaneously with a viral canine parvovirus infection, or an infection caused by other intestinal pathogens, the consequences can be much more serious. Hence, the infection precautions are necessary.

Canine Coronavirus Vaccines

After the CCoV infection, there is no specific treatment. The treatment of antibiotics is only useful in controlling secondary bacterial infections. The only required treatment may be the dietary restriction for 24 hours after diarrhea ceases and gradually reintroducing small amounts of food. So, precaution is the key to successful treatment of severe cases, such as clean contaminated areas or bedding at all times, and to protect dog from coming into contact with other dog's feces.

Vaccination of healthy dogs as an aid is an effective method to prevent the diseases caused by canine coronavirus infection. Creative Biolabs is developing several canine coronavirus vaccines, including:

Inactivated CCoV vaccines

Canine-Cv is a killed virus vaccine recommended for the vaccination of healthy dogs as an aid in the prevention of disease caused by canine coronavirus infection. The product is a liquid preparation of chemically inactivated coronavirus propagated on an established cell line and combined with an adjuvant designed to enhance the immune response. The injection way is subcutaneously or intramuscularly.

Combination Vaccines against CCoV

We are committed to developing an effective vaccine to protect dogs from canine coronavirus. ML-CCoV is the combination vaccines offers broad protection for dogs which will be a good option.

DA2PPC vaccine protects against parainfluenza, parvovirus, adenovirus, and canine coronavirus, the C indicates canine coronavirus. Administration is supportive and consists of antibiotics to prevent secondary infections, anticonvulsants for seizures, and intravenous fluids to prevent dehydration.

Another ML-CCoV is in the prevention of disease caused by canine distemper, infectious canine hepatitis, canine adenovirus type 2, canine coronavirus, canine parainfluenza, canine parvovirus, Leptospira canicola, Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae, Leptospira grippotyphosa, and Leptospira pomona. The recommended vaccination time should start at or about 6 weeks of age. The presence of maternal antibody is known to interfere with the development of active immunity. Puppies should be revaccinated every 2 to 3 weeks until 12 weeks of age.

A different strain of ML-CCoV is doing preclinical research which by itself appears to be safe and efficacious. We promise ann ML feline enteric coronavirus vaccine antigenically related to CCoV will become available in the future.
