Introduction
Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a type of Gram-negative bacterium that spreads through the sexual pathway and is the causative agent of gonorrhea. Neisseria gonorrhoeae can infect the eyes, throat and genitals, and both men and women can develop asymptomatic infections. The diagnosis of the disease caused by the bacterium is usually carried out by Gram staining, culturing, PCR, and the like on the urethral swab, the urine sample, and the cervical swab. Neisseria gonorrhoeae is able to evade surveillance of the host immune system by means of antigenic variation. Because of the variability of the bacterial antigen structure, the development of the Neisseria gonorrhoeae vaccine has been difficult, and there is currently no approved Neisseria gonorrhoeae vaccine in the world.
