Background

The development of the dosage form has gone through four stages. The third generation is utilization of targeted preparations prepared from pharmaceutical carriers such as monoclonal antibodies, liposomes, microparticles, and nanoparticles, such as osmotic pump preparations, membrane controlled-release preparations, etc. And the fourth generation is a drug delivery system that targets cell-level based on in vivo feedback information.

The development trend of pharmaceutical dosage forms is precise administration, targeted localization, and on-demand administration. The factors that should be considered in the design of controlled release preparations include the dose of the drug, the solubility, the pKa, the partition coefficient of oil and water of the drug, the stability of the drug in the gastrointestinal tract, and the biological factors such as biological half-life, absorption and metabolism. With osmotic pressure as the driving force, the drug release can be controlled to release the drug evenly and at a constant rate, achieving zero-order release of the drug. This is a commonly used drug release mechanism. Pump® was developed using this mechanism. The release of drugs using this drug release mechanism is not affected by factors such as media environment pH, gastrointestinal motility, food, etc., and the correlation between in vitro experiments and in vivo performance is better.

Pump® delivers vaccines, drugs, hormones, and other agents at a controlled rate for up to six weeks. And this technology does not need to be connected to external devices and does not require frequent operations. In addition to being used for systemic administration, Pump® can also be attached to a catheter for infusion of drugs into the brain, veins, and arteries, and can even target specific tissues or organs to deliver drugs.
