Introduction
Phocine distemper virus (PDV) was first identified in 1988 as the cause of death of 18,000 seals and 300 gray seals along the northern coast of Europe. It is a paramyxovirus of the genus Morbillivirus and is pathogenic for pinniped species, particularly seals. The suddenness of the emergence of PDV and related viruses in aquatic mammals has implicated environmental changes as the cause. Clinical symptoms include dyspnea, fever, and neurological symptoms.
Alternative Names
