Plasmodium knowlesi is a parasite that primarily infects primates and causes malaria. In addition to infecting long-tailed macaques, it can also infect humans through natural or artificial pathways. Plasmodium knowlesi is mainly distributed in Southeast Asia, where approximately 70% of malaria is caused by the pathogen.
