Antigen Information
Introduction
Schistosoma is considered to be the second-most socioeconomically devastating parasitic disease by the World Health Organization, after malaria. They are parasitic flatworms responsible for a highly significant group of infections in humans termed schistosomiasis. Depending on the type of infection, adult flatworms can invade capillaries of the bladder mesentery or plexus. They are unique among trematodes and any other flatworms because they are dioecious and have a distinct sexual dimorphism between male and female. Thousands of eggs are released and reach the bladder or intestine. Then the eggs are excreted into urine or faeces to fresh water. The larva must pass through the intermediate snail host before the next parasite larval stage emerges that can infect a new mammalian host by directly penetrating the skin.
