Introduction
Usutu virus (USUV) belongs to the family Flaviviridae, Flavivirus genus, and is an arbovirus found in South Africa in 1959. Its host includes Culex mosquitoes, birds, and humans. Considering the pathogenicity of the virus to humans and its ecological similarity to other new arboviruses such as the West Nile Virus, the virus is also classified as an emerging zoonotic arbovirus. In Africa, there are two human infections caused by the virus, one benign and another severe. The cases caused by the virus outside of Africa were first reported in Italy. This virus outbreak caused a lot of deaths among old world blackbirds.. Also in Italy, the first case of USUV-infected humans outside Africa was discovered in 2009, when an immunocompromised patient was infected with the virus and caused encephalitis.
