Introduction
Variola virus (also known as Variola or Variola vara in Latin, and pox or red plague) causes the human smallpox, an infectious disease unique to humans. Edward Jenner discovered in 1798 that vaccination could prevent smallpox. The last naturally occurring case was diagnosed in October 1977 and the World Health Organization certified the global eradication of the disease in 1980.
