Distemper Virus
Distemper virus belongs to the genus Morbillivirus, family Paramyxoviridae. Phocine distemper virus (PDV) was first identified in 1988 as the cause of death of 18,000 seals and 300 gray seals along the northern coast of Europe. The suddenness of the emergence of PDV and related viruses in aquatic mammals has implicated environmental changes as the cause. Clinical symptoms include dyspnea, fever, and neurological symptoms. Canine distemper virus (CDV) causes Canine distemper (sometimes termed hardpad disease), a disease which affects a wide variety of animal families. Despite extensive vaccination in many areas, it is still a major disease in dogs and is the leading cause of infectious disease death in dogsbefore the vaccine is available.
