Hepatitis E Virus
The hepatitis E virus (HEV), is the causative agent of hepatitis E. HEV is a small, non-enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus with an icosahedral capsid. The global burden of infections from the two major genotypes (1 and 2) is estimated at 20 million per year, leading to 70,000 deaths and 3,000 stillbirths. HEV is the major cause of sporadic hepatitis, as well as epidemic hepatitis. Hepatitis E is an enterically transmitted infection that is typically self-limited.
