The S2proExpre Platform
Unlike the traditional baculovirus-insect cell expression system, the S2proExpre platform is a system that uses Drosophila cells for protein expression without viral infection. The deficiencies of the baculovirus system is the need for packaging and amplification of the virus, which undoubtedly increases the labor, capital and time costs of the trial, and the lifespan of insect cells after infection is restricted, for that in the later stages of cell culture, the cells will be dissolved and dying due to viral infections, which on another level, limits the high yield production of proteins. Illustriously, S2proExpre platform totally avoids these concerns. By transfecting the exclusive DNA vector containing a strong promoter, this system enables transient or stable transfection and does not require pressure selection to achieve high levels of protein expression.
Drosophila cell lines were successfully established in 1972 and used to express recombinant proteins to become a favorable protein expression tool. Produced from fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) embryos, S2 cells multiply rapidly, doubling in 18-24 hours, and maintain benign growth status in serum-free medium. Most importantly, they are compatible with standard laboratory equipment.
