Infectious diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites. Pathogens attack the body's normal metabolic system and/or stimulate the immune system to produce a defensive response, resulting in the occurrence of infectious diseases usually with high fever, inflammation and other symptoms. Infectious diseases spread quickly from one person to another through directly contacting contaminated substances or people, or through indirect ways, such as by insects or other animals. The society is threatened by emerging infections that are rapidly increasing in incidence or geographic range.
Understanding the infectious cycle for the particular disease is critical to identify accessible targets for control strategies. Depending on the infectious cycle, powerful vaccines and antimicrobial therapeutics have been developed for infectious disease treatment. The advances and breakthroughs (e.g. remarkable eradication of smallpox) in anti-infection create hope that infectious diseases could be controlled or even eliminated.
