  • Background Information
  • Borrelia afzelii, a species of Borrelia, belongs to the Spirochaete family. Together with B. burgdorferi, and B. garinii it is the most common Borrelia species to cause Lyme disease or neuroborreliosis. B. afzelii is the most common borrelia species in central europe. The membrane associated lipoprotein bmpA is thought to be one of the most immunogenic proteins of the borrelia proteom.
