  • Background Information
  • The influenza A virus subtype H1N1 was the most common cause of human influenza in 2009. Some strains of H1N1 are endemic in humans, in pigs, and in birds. Complications in the upper and lower respiratory tract after influenza infection are common. Primary viral pneumonia is a severe complication after influenza infection, and occurs most frequently in humans with high risk for virus infections, e.g., elderly- or immunocompromised patients.
