Discovery of Antibody and Peptide Targeting Campylobacter

As a leading service provider, Creative Biolabs offers the best and affordable services for bacteria-specific antibody and peptide discovery for either therapeutic or laboratory applications. We have developed an optimized Anti-Bacteria Biomolecular Discovery platform which increases the quality and specificity of antibodies and peptides and minimizes the possibility of failure.

Campylobacter jejuni is the most common food-borne bacterial pathogen of humans. It is a major cause of severe gastroenteritis. Studies have revealed that the multiple outer membrane components of C. jejuni such as flagellin, LPS are the predominant antigens that can induce antibody response.

Campylobacter Targets for Antibodies

Discovery of Antibody and Peptide Targeting Campylobacter

  • Outer Membrane Proteins (OMPs)

The outer membrane proteins (OMPs) of C. jejuni are important components of the cell envelope. Many Gram-negative bacteria have one or more predominant OMPs. C. jejuni major OMP is an immunodominant protein and acts as an attractive target antigen. Moreover, the OMP contains numerous variable regions that could be targeted for species-specific recognition by mAbs.

  • Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)

The O-antigen and the core region of the LPS are conserved among Gram-negative bacteria. MAbs recognizing C. fetus LPS O-antigen epitopes are highly specific for this organism. Both anti-core and anti-O chain LPS mAbs have potential as diagnostic reagents for the detection and characterization of C. fetus.

  • Flagellum

The flagellum is a very essential component that is responsible for in vivo colonization of C. jejuni and elicits a strong antibody response in both humans and animals. A study reports that anti-flagellin antibodies have a potential protective role in C. jejuni infection in humans and chickens.

Peptides against Campylobacter

Discovery of Antibody and Peptide Targeting Campylobacter

In addition to acting as immune targets for antibodies development, these surface molecules of Campylobacter act as the targets for antibacterial peptides. By using phage display technology, a study has identified 11 unique peptides which inhibit the growth of C.jejuni by up to 99.9% in vitro. Besides, a number of bacteriocins produced by Gram-positive bacteria are antimicrobial peptides which have been revealed inhibitory effect against C. jejuni. Interestingly, some nonribosomal lipopeptides produced by Bacillus and Paenibacillus spp. also show exert antimicrobial activity against this pathogen.
