Tumor-associated calcium signal transducer 2 (Trop2) is a protein in humans is encoded by the TACSTD2 gene. Trop2 was first discovered in trophoblast cells. It is a transmembrane type-1 glycoprotein expressed in multistratified epithelia and several stem/progenitor and carcinoma cells. Trop2 could form an analogous dimer. The incomplete or aberrant production of Trop2 may cause it to lose its function and to be internalized from the membrane into the cytoplasm, where it plays a role in cancer progression. Due to elevated expression levels in carcinoma cells vs. normal tissue, Trop2 has clinical potential both for cancer prognosis and immunotherapy.
