Background
CD1E is another member of the CD1 family of transmembrane glycoproteins that present lipid and glycolipid antigens to T cells. However, CD1E has unique features and likely presents a distinct repertoire of lipid antigens. It is expressed in endosomal/lysosomal compartments and undergoes significant processing, including proteolytic cleavage, to generate the mature antigen-presenting molecule. CD1E plays a role in both innate and adaptive immunity and its specific lipid antigen presentation may be important in responses to certain pathogens or in autoimmune conditions.
