Homogalacturonan

Full Name
Homogalacturonan
Keywords
Homogalacturonan; MeGalAa1-4GalAa1-4GalAa1-4GalAa1-4GalAa1-4MeGalA-R; HG; Pectic polysaccharide (Homogalacturonan); Pectic polysaccharide
Background
A polysaccharide (such as pectin) made up of linked galacturonic acid residues. Homogalacturonan (HG) is a linear chain of 1,4-linked α-d-galactopyranosyluronic acid (GalpA) residues in which some of the carboxyl groups are methyl esterified. Pectin is made up of a complex set of polysaccharides that are found in most primary cell walls and are particularly abundant in the non-woody parts of terrestrial plants. Pectin is a major component of the middle lamella, where it helps to bind cells together, but is also found in primary cell walls.
