Background
Xylan is a complex polysaccharide and a major component of hemicellulose, which is found in the cell walls of terrestrial plants. Its backbone is a linear chain of xylose units linked by β-(1,4)-glycosidic bonds, with various side chains such as arabinose and glucuronic acid. Xylan is an important source of dietary fiber and acts as a prebiotic, as it is not digested by human enzymes but is fermented by beneficial bacteria in the colon.
