  • Taeniasis: Adult tapeworms live in the intestines of the definitive hosts and this infection is called taeniasis. Humans are the definitive hosts for T. solium, T. asiatica, and T. saginata. Taeniasis can be diagnosed by demonstrating Taenia proglottids or eggs in the feces. ELISA and PCR are commonly used methods to differentiate the eggs of T. solium from T. saginata. Alternatively, morphology can be used to distinguish these proglottids.
  • Cysticercosis: Infection with the larval form of Taenia solium, T. ovis, T. saginata, T. crassiceps, T. hydatigena or T. taeniaeformis results in cysticercosis, which can be detected via multiple routes. Imaging approaches such as computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used to identify cysticerci in the brain. Inactive cysts in various parts of the body including muscle and brain may be visualized on X-ray. Biopsies may be used for subcutaneous nodules, and larvae in the eye can be found during an ocular examination. Clinical serologic tests include enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB), ELISA, complement fixation and hemagglutination.
  • Coenurosis: Infection with the larval forms of T. multiceps, T. serialis and T. brauni leads to coenurosis. Humans and animals can be intermediate hosts for T. multiceps, T. serialis and T. brauni. Coenurosis is uncommon in humans, thus its diagnosis is similar to cysticercosis.

Routine antibody-based diagnosis of cysticercosis still relies on the employment of complex antigens, such as metacestode cyst fluid in ELISA diagnosis. A major disadvantage of this assay is that it demands access to Taenia infected hosts as a source of parasite-derived antigen and cross-reactions occur. Synthetic peptides and recombinant antigens potentially provide a reliable, reproducible and cost-effective alternative, independent of a supply of parasite-derived material.
