CD27

CD27 belongs to the TNF-receptor superfamily. It is mostly found on a large proportion of NK cells and on most CD4+ and CD8+ cells. Surprisingly, CD27 is absent on naïve B cells but it is induced upon priming. CD70 is primarily controlled by antigen receptor and Toll-like receptor stimulation on T cells. The role of CD27 in the immune response is dependent on CD70 expression. CD27-CD70 interactions can come into play in the T cell priming phase during contact between T cells and dendritic cells and also in the expansion phase during contact between T cells. CD27 promotes the survival of virus-specific T cells at sites of priming and infection and acts independent of and complementary to CD28, which controls effector of T cell accumulation as well. Consistently, accumulation of CD8+ effector T cells and their capacity to reject the graft is dependent on the collective contributions of CD27 and CD28 in a cardiac allograft model.
In clinical practice, CD 27 on the membrane and its soluble form are used as lymphocyte subset markers and disease markers in the case of lymphoid malignancies, autoimmunity and transplant rejection.
