CDH1

Cadherin 1 (CDH1), also known as epithelial cadherin (E-cadherin), CAM 120/80, UVO, CDHE, ECAD, LCAM, Arc-1 or CD324, is a calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion glycoprotein. This protein is the most well-studied member of the cadherin family and it consists of five extracellular cadherin repeats (EC1 ~ EC5), a transmembrane region and a highly conserved intracellular domain that binds p120-catenin and beta-catenin. CDH1 plays an important role in regulating cell-cell adhesions, mobility and proliferation of epithelial cells.

CDH1 is expressed in non-neural epithelial tissues and is regarded as a tumor suppressor gene. Defects in this gene are correlated with various cancers, including hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC), breast, colorectal, thyroid and ovarian cancer. It is reported that loss of function of this gene can cause cancer progression by increasing proliferation, invasion, and metastasis. What's more, this protein is also involved in bacterial infection, since its ectodomain mediates bacterial adhesion to mammalian cells and the cytoplasmic domain is required for internalization.
