Of note, they have the highest number of IgG genotypes among all mammalian species (IgG1-7 based on different variants of heavy chain constant regions). Among the seven IgG isotypes in horse, IgG4, IgG7, and probably IgG1 are protective against intracellular infections, while IgG3 and/or IgG5 play critical roles in extracellular pathogens and acute infections. The discovery of horse antibodies may contribute to biomedical, diagnostic, and research for several diseases, such as Ebola virus infections. Moreover, the varied functional capabilities might provide implications for humoral immune response mechanisms as well as vaccine strategies.
