Carbonic anhydrase 6 (CA6), also known as Carbonic Anhydrase VI (CA-VI), GUSTIN, or salivary Carbonic Anhydrase, is a zinc-metalloprotein that belongs to the alpha-carbonic anhydrase family. In humans, this protein is encoded by the CA6 gene. The expression of this protein is found only in salivary glands and saliva, and it is reported that CA6 protein is associated with hypogeusia, a disease with loss of taste and pathological changes in taste buds. What's more, this protein may play a role in the reversible hydratation of carbon dioxide, catalyzing the reversible reaction of CO2 + H2O = HCO3- + H+, which is fundamental to many processes such as renal tubular acidification, respiration and bone resorption, thus CA6 protein may play an important role in normal growth.
According to the function and characteristic, CA6 protein has been used used as markers for tumor and hypoxia in the clinic as well as a tool for CO2 removal and mosquito control in industry. Furthermore, this protein is an elementary component of milk and it can be used a nutritional supplement in milk.
