FAT1

FAT atypical cadherin 1 (FAT1), also known as FAT, ME5, CDHF7, CDHR8 or hFat1 and as an ortholog of the Drosophila fat gene, FAT1 gene is reported to encode a tumor suppressor essential for controlling cell proliferation during Drosophila development. The protein encoded by this gene, called as Protocadherin Fat 1, is an integral membrane protein that belongs to the cadherin superfamily characterized by the presence of cadherin-type repeats. This protein contains 34 tandem cadherin-type repeats, five epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like repeats and one laminin A-G domain.
The expression of this protein is found in various epithelial and several endothelial and smooth muscle cells, and it is reported that this protein may function as an adhesion molecule and/or signaling receptor, and may be involved in developmental processes and cell communication.
