Interleukin 13 (IL13), also known as P600 or IL-13, is an immunoregulatory cytokine derived from activated Th2 cells. Apart from TH2 cells, IL-13 also produced via other T helper cell subsets CD8+ T cells, eosinophils, mast cells, and basophils following activation. Due to the ability of induction proliferation and immunoglobulin E (IgE) synthesis through human B cells, IL-13 is considered to serve a role in the pathogenesis of IgE-mediated allergic diseases. Beside, IL-13 restrains generation of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines via monocytes/macrophages both in vitro and in vivo, suggesting that it also processes anti-inflammatory features.
In general, IL-13 is associated with a variety of stages of B-cell maturation and differentiation. It up-regulates CD23 and MHC class II expression, and enhances IgE isotype switching of B cells. However, IL-13 also down-regulates macrophage activity, resulting in the inhibition of the generation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Moreover, IL-13 has been shown to be crucial to the pathogenesis of allergen-induced asthma but operates via mechanisms independent of IgE and eosinophils.
