NRP1

Neuropilin 1 (NRP1), also known as NP1 or NRP, encoded by NRP1 gene, is a single-pass transmembrane glycoprotein which contains a large N-terminal extracellular domain, a short transmembrane domain, and a small cytoplasmic domain. The protein exerts a multifarious role in angiogenesis, cell survival, migration, and attraction. The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) can bind to the heterodimer of NRP1-VEGFR2 to reinforce VEGF signaling activity, stimulating angiogenesis and cardiac outflow tract remodeling in the development of cardiovascular system. Moreover, NRP1 is also important for the endothelial cells migration and tumor cells survival and migration.
The NRP1 is widely expressed in multiple human tissues, such as placenta, fat, gallbladder, endometrium, heart, lung, kidney, ovary, spleen, thyroid, urinary bladder and so on. It is proved that the NRP1 is associated with a number of pathological conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. For example, the overexpression of NRP1 has been found in the pathological process of breast cancer. These suggest that NRP1 can be regarded as a therapeutic target applied to treat various cardiovascular disease and cancer.
