The nanodiscs is a non-covalent structure of lipid bilayer and membrane scaffold protein (MSP). MSPs are genetically engineered proteins, derived from human apolipoprotein A-1 to shield the hydrophobic core of the lipids from the aqueous phase. The size of the nanodiscs was controlled by the length of the MSPs. The diameter of nanodiscs is typically in the order of ~10 nm, but generation of specific MSP variants allows the formation of smaller (6-7 nm) and larger (16-17 nm) nanodiscs. Nanodiscs is useful in the study of membrane proteins and is a more native environment than liposomes and detergent micelles.
