Antigen Detail

TargetAPOA1
DescriptionApolipoprotein A1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the APOA1 gene. It has a specific role in lipid metabolism. The text in a 2014 report suggested that APOA1 mRNA is regulated by endogenously expressed antisense RNA.

Target Overview

Gene SymbolAPOA1
Full NameApolipoprotein A1
BackgroundApurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) sites (also called "abasic sites") occur frequently in DNA molecules by spontaneous hydrolysis, by DNA damaging agents or by DNA glycosylases that remove specific abnormal bases. AP sites are pre-mutagenic lesions that can prevent normal DNA replication. All cells, from simple prokaryotes to humans, have evolved systems to identify and repair such sites. Class II AP endonucleases cleave the phosphodiester backbone 5' to the AP site, thereby initiating a process known as?base excision repair?(BER). The APEX gene (alternatively named APE1, HAP1, APEN) encodes the major AP endonuclease in human cells. Splice variants have been found for this gene; all encode the same protein.
Alternative NamesAPOA1; entrez:335; apo(a); apolipoprotein A1; Apolipoprotein A-I; HPALP2
Gene ID335
Uniprot IDP02647

Involvement in DiseaseDiseases associated with APOA1 include Hypoalphalipoproteinemia, Primary, 2 and Amyloidosis, Familial Visceral.
FunctionThe encoded preproprotein is proteolytically processed to generate the mature protein, which promotes cholesterol efflux from tissues to the liver for excretion, and is a cofactor for lecithin cholesterolacyltransferase (LCAT), an enzyme responsible for the formation of most plasma cholesteryl esters.
Related PathwaysIts related pathways are Lipoprotein metabolism and Folate Metabolism.
