Antigen Detail

TargetHaptoglobin
DescriptionHaptoglobin (abbreviated as Hp) is the protein that in humans is encoded by the HP gene.[5][6] In blood plasma, haptoglobin binds to free hemoglobin,[7] compared to hemopexin that binds to free heme,[8] released from erythrocytes with high affinity, and thereby inhibits its deleterious oxidative activity. The haptoglobin-hemoglobin complex will then be removed by the reticuloendothelial system (mostly the spleen).

FunctionAs a result of hemolysis, hemoglobin is found to accumulate in the kidney and is secreted in the urine. Haptoglobin captures, and combines with free plasma hemoglobin to allow hepatic recycling of heme iron and to prevent kidney damage. Haptoglobin also acts as an antioxidant, has antibacterial activity, and plays a role in modulating many aspects of the acute phase response.
Related PathwaysIts related pathways are amb2 Integrin signaling and Binding and Uptake of Ligands by Scavenger Receptors.
