| Background | Myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG, Siglec-4) is a type 1 transmembrane protein glycoprotein, located in the membranes of axon Schwann cells and oligodendrocytes, and plays a role in the interaction of glial axons. MAG is a member of the SIGLEC protein family and a functional ligand for the NGOR receptor of NOGO-66. MAG is thought to be involved in the myelination of PNS during nerve regeneration, which is essential for the long-term survival of myelin axons after myelination. In the central nervous system, MAG is one of the three major myelin-related inhibitors of axonal regeneration after injury, making it an important protein for future research on neurogenesis in the central nervous system. |
