| Description | Ubiquitin carboxyl terminal hydrolase L1 (EC 3.1.2.15, Ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase, UCH-L1) is a deubiquitinating enzyme.UCH-L1 is a member of a gene family whose products hydrolyze the small C-terminal adduct of ubiquitin to produce ubiquitin monomers. The expression of UCH-L1 is highly specific for neurons and cells of the diffuse neuroendocrine system and their tumors. It is widely present in all neurons (about 1-2 of total brain protein) and is specifically expressed in neurons and testes/ovaries. The catalytic triad of UCH-L1 contains cysteine at position 90, aspartic acid at position 176, and histidine at position 161, which is the reason for its hydrolase activity. |

| Function | Ubiquitin-protein hydrolase involved both in the processing of ubiquitin precursors and of ubiquitinated proteins (Probable). This enzyme is a thiol protease that recognizes and hydrolyzes a peptide bond at the C-terminal glycine of ubiquitin (PubMed:9774100, PubMed:8639624, PubMed:12408865, PubMed:23359680).
