Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA)
Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a group of highly related glycoproteins involved in cell adhesion. CEA is usually produced in gastrointestinal tissues during fetal development but is stopped before birth. Therefore, CEA usually presents very low levels in the blood of healthy adults. However, serum levels are raised in certain types of cancer, which means that it can be used as a tumor marker in clinical trials.
Serum CEA levels in patients with colorectal cancer are generally higher than those in healthy people (approximately 2.5 μg/L or higher). The CEA measurement is mainly used as a tumor marker to monitor the treatment of colorectal cancer, to identify recurrence after surgical resection, to stage cancer or to localize cancer spread by measuring biological fluids. CEA levels may also be raised in gastric cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, and medullary thyroid cancer as well as some non-neoplastic diseases such as ulcerative colitis, pancreatitis, cirrhosis, COPD, Crohn's disease, hypothyroidism, and smokers.

CEA Marker of Endometriosis
CEA is a useful marker for the detection of recurrent disease in endometrial carcinoma patients. The value of CEA antigen is evaluated in combination with CA-125 and CA19-9 in patients with endometriosis and is found distinguish between endometriosis and malignant tumors.
