3D Ex Vivo Human Colon Tissue Model Introduction

The Ex Vivo Human Colon Tissue

The human colon contains typical histological structures such as mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, as well as serosa/adventitia. In normal human physiological functions, the colon is primarily responsible for the temporary storage and transport of feces. Human organ culture technology enables the research of physiology and pathophysiology at the whole tissue level. Past studies have shown that normal human colon tissue can be preserved ex vivo for several days or longer and thus can be used for the study of colon tissue-related diseases. More critically, the histological and immunohistological features of normal and neoplastic colon tissues were preserved during organ culture. For example, signaling events that occur under elevated Ca2+ concentrations can be elucidated using intact ex vivo colon tissue models.
