Background

The influenza virus M2 protein is a crucial transmembrane protein found in the lipid bilayer of the viral envelope. Its primary function is to act as an ion channel, facilitating the entry of protons into the virus particle during viral replication. This proton channel activity is essential for the uncoating of the viral RNA within the host cell, allowing the viral genome to enter the host cell cytoplasm. The M2 protein also plays a role in viral assembly and budding. Due to its pivotal role in the viral replication cycle, the M2 protein has been a target for antiviral drug development. While drugs targeting the M2 protein were previously used, their efficacy has been limited by the emergence of drug-resistant viral strains. The possibility of using M2 protein as a target for novel antiviral tactics is still being investigated.
