Thyroglobulin (TG) is a glycoprotein produced and stored in the thyroid gland. TG is a substrate for the manufacture of thyroid hormones which include triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). TG is comprised of large amino acid chains that form the structural framework for thyroid hormone synthesis. Within the thyroid follicles, TG is synthesized, processed, and then stored in colloid-filled vesicles called TG droplets. When the body requires thyroid hormone, TG is taken up by thyroid cells and processed to release T3 and T4. These hormones play a critical role in controlling the body's growth, development, metabolism, and other physiological functions. Measurement of TG levels is often used as a diagnostic marker for certain thyroid conditions, including thyroid cancer recurrence and autoimmune thyroid diseases.
