The Importance of Serotonin Receptors

Serotonin receptors, 5-hydroxytryptamine receptors, or 5-HT receptors, are a type of GPCR. They are mainly expressed in the membrane of nerve cells and meditate the release of numerous neurotransmitters and hormones, such as dopamine, oxytocin, cortisol, and many more. Many important physiological activities such as anxiety and cognition are related to serotonin receptors. Therefore, they can serve as effective drug targets for neurological diseases. This suggests an urgent need for further understanding of serotonin receptors.

The Principle of Magic™ In Vitro Cell-Based Serotonin Receptor Functional Assay Service

Creative Biolabs has come out with a rapid and robust Magic™ in vitro cell-based serotonin receptor functional assay service and is now offering it to global customers in an effort to aid in the development of drugs for the treatment of disease.

Our Magic™ in vitro cell-based serotonin receptor functional assay service overcomes the constraints of conventional assays by incorporating the benefits of cell-based in vitro assay. In this assay, we employed the accumulation of second messengers as the measuring indicators based on the downstream response induced by the interaction of serotonin receptors with their ligands. This assay allows for a comprehensive evaluation of the samples' potential as serotonin receptors or regulators. At Creative Biolabs, we guarantee the timely delivery of results that will satisfy each customer.

Representative Data

Representative data 1: Neuronal diseases are associated with the serotonin receptor 5-HT2A and the tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB), both of which play critical roles in regulating neuroplasticity. Using co-immunoprecipitation and other biophysical and biochemical methods, the study proved that 5-HT2A and TrkB physically interact with one another in vitro and in vivo. These findings elucidate a role for 5-HT2A-TrkB receptor heterodimerization and provide molecular support for differential expression of 5-HT2A and TrkB as a developmental and pathological mechanism for modulating TrkB activities in distinct brain regions.

Representative data 2: The serotonergic system, especially the serotonin 1A receptor (5-HT1AR) in particular, has been linked to MDD. The research investigated whether or not 5-HT1AR is palmitoylated in human and mouse brains and discovered that ZDHHC21 is a significant palmitoyl acyltransferase, the depletion of which decreased palmitoylation and, by extension, the signaling capabilities of 5-HT1AR. According to the findings, restoring 5-HT1AR palmitoylation is a viable therapeutic approach for the treatment of MDD, speculating that it may be a mechanism implicated in depression.
