Calcitonin Receptors with Prospect

The calcitonin receptor (CTR) belongs to a GPCR subfamily that contains multiple peptides. They are widespread throughout the life cycle of organisms. Although CTR is best recognized for its involvement in bone and calcium homeostasis, its expression has been associated with a variety of cancers, such as breast and bone tumors. Evidence indicates that CTR could function as a viable therapeutic target in cancer treatment. Thus, understanding the function of CTR has great significance for its application in drug development of cancer therapy.

Representative data

cAMP signaling by CTR activated by its cognate agonists.Fig.3 cAMP signaling by CTR activated by its cognate agonists.2

CTR function was assessed using a cAMP accumulation assay. The findings showed a significant, concentration-dependent rise in cAMP in response to CTR agonists in the traditional GBM model cell line SB2b. The strength of the reaction to sCT (pEC50 ± 9.4 0.3) and hCT (pEC50 ± 8.0 0.2) was comparable to their known CTR affinities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Which cells contain calcitonin receptors?

A1: Calcitonin receptors have been found in a variety of tissues throughout the body. The kidney, osteocytes, brain, testes, placenta, and lung all have receptors for calcitonin.

Q2: What is calcitonin like receptor CLR?

A2: CLR (calcitonin receptor-like receptor) does not bind any known endogenous ligand on its own, but when combined with RAMPs, it produces receptors for CGRP, adrenomedullin, and adrenomedullin 2/intermedin.
