Scientists have explored whether Escherichia coli possesses a C1qR-like protein that confers protection against complement-mediated damage. Our findings revealed that C1q-binding protein (C1qBP) binds C1q, inhibiting its hemolytic function in both a dose- and time-dependent manner. C1qBP binding to C1q is impeded by C1q itself, along with its collagen-like stalks and globular heads, differing from human C1qR, which is only inhibited by the stalks. C1qBP, upon binding, prevents C1 complex formation with C1r and C1s. Not restricted to E. coli, C1qBP is also present in Staphylococcus aureus, Citrobacter freundii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These results highlight a potential bacterial mechanism for complement evasion.
