Overview of Complement C2

The complement system plays important roles in host defense against microbes and antibody-mediated tissue injury. The lectin pathway, the alternative pathway, and the classical pathway are the three main pathways by which complement is activated. Complement C2 is crucial to the classical and lectin pathways, because it acts as the proteolytic center for the activates the convertases of C3 and C5. This activation of C3 and C5 allows for the amplification of the complement response, induction of inflammatory responses, opsonization of pathogenic particles, and the beginning of the terminal membrane-attack phase of the complement.

Introduction of Complement C2 Functional Test

Method

The complement C2 functional test is a laboratory test used to assess the activity and functionality of the complement component C2 in the blood. This can be done by using specific activators or assays to evaluate the activation or consumption of C2 in a blood sample.

Analysis

Deficiencies in C2 are associated with an increased susceptibility to certain infections, particularly those caused by encapsulated bacteria. Additionally, deficiencies in C2 can be linked to autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus.

Applications

Disease detection

Complement protein C2 is associated with many diseases. An infection, a viral disease, or an autoimmune disorder can be diagnosed by detecting C2 activity. Test results can also keep track of disease progress.

Serving as a biomarker

Circulating complement factors C2 has the potential to be a biomarker for predicting diseases and studying the pathogenesis of diseases.

Drug development

The functional C2 assay opens up new possibilities for customizing anti-complement medicines to enhance the treatment of diseases.

Questions & Answer

A: There are several laboratory techniques used to measure complement C2 activity, including radial immunodiffusion, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and functional assays such as the hemolytic assay and the CH50 assay.

A: Several factors can affect the accuracy of complement C2 functional test results, including sample handling and processing, laboratory techniques used, and any medications the patient may be taking that could interfere with the complement system.

A: The results of the complement C2 functional test in the lab can be normal, abnormal, or equivocal. A normal result indicates that the complement system is functioning properly, and there is no deficiency in the complement C2 protein. An abnormal result indicates that the activity of the complement C2 protein is reduced or absent, suggesting a deficiency in the complement system. An equivocal or intermediate result suggests that there may be a partial deficiency or that the activity of the complement system is decreased but not completely absent. It is important to note that the complement C2 functional test only measures the activity of the complement C2 protein and may not detect deficiencies in other components of the complement system.

A: The timeline for receiving results from the test could vary depending on the complexity of the sample and test specifications. Typically, test results are delivered within 2-4 weeks after the sample is received. If the initial test result is inconclusive, we will reach out to discuss the next steps. This may include re-testing the sample or obtaining a new sample. We want to ensure we provide accurate and valuable data for your research.

A: Yes, we do provide our complement C2 functional test internationally. However, please note that shipping regulations vary by country, so ensure you comply with your local regulations when sending samples.
