General Introduction of Cholesterol Esters
Cholesteryl esters are both the intracellular storage form and intravascular transport form of cholesterol. Cholesteryl esters exist in liquid states, crystal, and liquid crystal. Cholesterol (cholest-5-en-3β-ol) is a member of polycyclic compounds families, referred to sterols, and expressed abundantly by far in animal tissues. Cholesterol plays a vital role in cell signaling, transport processes and nerve conduction in mammals. Cholesterol esters also play an essential role in the normal functioning of cells not only as a cell membrane constituent but also as a precursor of steroid hormones and other key metabolites including vitamin D and bile acids. The physical state of cholesteryl esters at physiologic temperatures may be a determinant of their pathogenicity.

The Role of Cholesterol Esters in Sepsis
In a related research, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein, and triglyceride levels were compared between sepsis cases and controls. Cholesterol, apolipoprotein, phospholipid and CETP concentrations were monitored in the case group. According to reports, it suggested that HDL cholesterol may have a protective effect against sepsis and the magnitude reduction of lipoprotein level during the acute-phase response may be associated with the severity and mortality of sepsis. HDL cholesterol may have a protective effect against sepsis. The reduction of plasma CETP may result in mortality. The study has been shown that lipoproteins and CETP levels were associated with severe sepsis in hospitalized patients.
