Sepsis has been defined as a systemic inflammatory response to infection or refers to a bacterial infection in the bloodstream or body tissue. The term “sepsis” and “severe sepsis” are sometimes used interchangeably to describe the syndrome of infection complicated by acute organ dysfunction. Sepsis can originate from the sites that bacteria can gain entry to the body, which commonly contain lungs, liver and its bile ducts, the gastrointestinal tract, the genitourinary tract. The wound also is the common infection site for sepsis especially in the condition of surgical operation. There are an increasing number of deaths from sepsis each year which may result from the following three factors: the overuse of antibiotics in infectious illnesses that lead to drug-resistant bacteria, the increase number of elderly people, and the rise in the number of organ transplants and other surgical procedures suppressing the patient's immune system.

Clinical Features of Sepsis Infections

Sepsis is a syndrome of organ failure that complicates the clinical course of patients with a primary, acute systemic infection or with a secondary infection after an initial sterile injury. The clinical features of sepsis are high variable which depend on the initial site of the infection, the causative organism, the pattern of acute organ dysfunction the underlying health status of the infected patient, and the interval before initiation of treatment. The respiratory and cardiovascular systems are the most commonly affected in acute organ dysfunction, which are classically manifested as the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and hypotension. Central nervous system also appears dysfunction manifesting as obtundation or delirium. In addition, decreasing urine output and increasing serum creatinine level manifest the acute kidney injury.

Treatment for Sepsis Infections

Treatment for sepsis infected patient relies mainly on early recognition which allows the correct therapeutic management to be taken rapidly. Measures taken by clinical medicals often include administration of appropriate antibiotics, source control measures when necessary, and resuscitation with intravenous fluids and vasoactive drugs when needed.
