Micelles are often considered as dynamic structures with a "rough" surface. The detergent monomer within the micelle is rapidly exchanged with the free detergent monomer in solution. Once membrane proteins are dissolved, we generally think of detergent molecules as forming torus around hydrophobic transmembrane domains.)
