Somatostatins are peptide hormones that control a wide range of cellular processes, including neurotransmission, cell division, and endocrine signaling. They also prevent the release of numerous hormones and other secretory proteins. The two active versions of somatostatin include 14 and 28 amino acids. A family of G-protein coupled somatostatin receptors that are expressed in different tissues mediate the biological effects of somatostatins. This gene produces a protein that belongs to the seven-transmembrane-segment superfamily of somatostatin receptors. Together with other members of the superfamily, including G-protein coupled receptors, and receptor tyrosine kinases, somatostatin receptors can form homodimers and heterodimers.
