EGFR

This gene produces a transmembrane glycoprotein, which belongs to the protein kinase superfamily. This protein functions as an epidermal growth factor receptor. The cell surface protein known as EGFR interacts with epidermal growth factor to cause receptor dimerization and tyrosine autophosphorylation, which promotes cell growth. Lung cancer is linked to mutations in this gene. A severe type of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 has EGFR as a contributing factor (SARS-CoV-2).
